2021년 6월, 프라이드 먼스(Pride Month)를 맞이해 제4 회 서울 드랙 퍼레이드 개최를 하고자 기금을 마련하고자 합니다. 서울 드랙 퍼레이드는 전 세계적인 퀴어 인권운동이자 문화활동인 프라이드 퍼레이드와 한국의 서울 (및 다른 지방의) 퀴어 퍼레이드에 영감을 받아 2018년 5월 26일 토요일에 연인원 1,000여명의 참가자와 함께 성공적으로 첫 개최를 하였으며, 창립 멤버들은 같은 해 포브스(Forbes)가 선정한 아시아에서 영향력 있는 30세 이하의 30인 행사에 초청받기도 했습니다. 이후 서울 드랙 퍼레이드는 서울, 대구, 제주, 인천, 경남 지역의 퀴어문화축제에도 참여하며 꾸준한 활동을 펼쳐오고 있습니다. 서울 드랙 퍼레이드의 목적은 다양한 퀴어인들, 더 나아가 모든 개인이 드랙이라는 매체를 통해 자신의 정체성을 찾아가고, 본인의 감정과 생각, 스타일을 진실되게 표출할 수 있게끔 장려하는데에 있습니다. 서울 드랙 퍼레이드는 트랜스젠더는 물론 그 누구도 개인의 성적 지향, 성 정체성, 드랙 스타일이 원인이 되어 차별받는 것을 절대 용인하지 않습니다. 퍼레이드 및 모든 관련 행사에는 드랙 아티스트들 뿐만 아니라 모든 퀴어와 앨라이가 참여하실 수 있습니다.
2020년에는 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인해 오프라인 상의 퍼레이드를 대신하여 온라인상에서 해쉬태그와 영상을 통하여 참가가 가능한 이벤트들을 진행하였으며, 다가오는 2021년 6월에는 서울에서는 물론 전 세계 어디에서 LGBTQ+ 커뮤니티의 멤버, 혹은 앨라이라면 누구나 안전하게 즐길 수 있는 온라인 공연을 개최하고자 합니다. 한국어와 영어 2개국어로 진행되는 토크쇼를 덧붙여 한국의 드랙 아티스트들과 해외의 드랙 아티스트들의 공연을 고루 선보일 수 있는 자리를 마련하고자 합니다. 이에 따라 공연을 펼쳐주실 드랙퀸, 드랙킹 분들의 공연료 지급과 행사 준비를 위한 기타 비용을 마련하기 위해 본 펀드레이저를 기획하게 되었습니다.

Seoul Drag Parade is fundraising for our annual event in 2021, which will be held online in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Seoul Drag Parade was established three years ago with our first event being held on 26th May 2018 to celebrate local drag with a march around Itaewon, a famous neighbourhood in Seoul for its foreign residents and queer night life. We wanted to bring awareness to the LGBTQ+ community by showing drag during the day as it is usually restricted to bars and clubs, and we also wanted to give a safe platform for anyone to try out drag and express themselves. We predicted a turnout of around 50 people but news quickly spread and we had around 1,000 participants for a fun queer parade and we managed to squeeze as many people as we could into our venue for the drag show / after party. International news outlets from over 60 countries covered the event and we were recognised by Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia.
Queer youth in Korea particularly resonated with our event as many minors were able to see a drag show for the first time so we created more free events for minors with the funds we raised from the 1st Seoul Drag Parade. Over the years, our events and shows have become increasingly important to queer young people – giving them a safe space to enjoy and even try out drag. And we also work closely with Dding Dong – a queer teen safe space based in Seoul. With Seoul Drag Parade, we were able to tour all over Korea and put on performances for the LGBTQ+ community in Incheon, Daegu, Jeju, and many more. Last year, Seoul suffered many restrictions due to the global pandemic so we held Seoul Drag Parade 2020 online for the first time with a hashtag event, awards, and a lip sync event which you can see here . We had a lot of fun and many people participated but we still think it was lacking many areas so we want to create an even better Seoul Drag Parade 2021 this year. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we haven’t been able to do any offline events in the past year – including fundraisers. Therefore, we are asking for help and donations to cover the cost of running this event, pay performers a decent wage, and fund all other organisation fees. Plans are not set in stone but we definitely want to hold a bilingual digital drag show in June with diverse performers which will be free for anyone around the world to watch. As we will be online again, we also want to create more digital events to connect the LGBTQ+ community in Seoul with worldwide drag artists and fans of Korean queer culture.
